چکیده
However, little attention has been devoted to studying multivariate measurements. In particular, we have yet to develop tools to study relationships between measurements. Consider the following examples Example 1.1. Suppose you want to study the relationship between the height of a boy and his father. Here, we take two measurements per child, the child’s height and his/her father’s height, and we are interested in whether there is a relationship between the heights. Example 1.2. We are interested in studying the relationship between height and weight of UPenn students. Here, each Penn student has two measurements, height and weight. Example 1.3. Geologists are interested in studying the relationship between seismic activity from different outposts and the distance from these outposts to a nearby active volcano. Here, each outpost collects two measurements, the seismic activity and the distance from it to the nearby active volcano. These lectures will illustrate how we can study linear relationships between two measurements. We’ll develop tools to derive linear relationships, provide tools to infer whether such a relationship exists, and finally consider various diagnostic tools to validate the derived linear relations.

Lectures on Multiple Linear Regression Stat 431 , Summer 2012
Multiple regression is an extension to simple regression in several ways. First, instead of examining a linear relationship bewteen two measurements, Xi and Yi, multiple regression aims to explain relationships between p measurements of an object i, denoted as (Xi,1, ..., Xi,p) and Yi. Based on a sample of n points, with each point having measurements (Yi, Xi,1, ..., Xi,p), multiple regression ...
متن کاملLecture on Model Selection Stat 431 , Summer 2012
In model selection, we seek a relationship between Y and X,1, ..., X,p that is parsimonious, but still retains good predictive power, as represented by the SSE. Each subset of X,1, ..., X,p that will be used for the fit is one particular model, denoted as M, for studying the relationship between Y and X,1, ..., X,p and we want to choose a subset ofX,1, ..., X,p that achieves this goal. The sele...
متن کاملPrediction of Mean Overtopping Discharge at Vertical Seawalls Using MLR and GLM Statistical Approaches
Wave overtopping at breakwaters is one of their essential hydraulic characteristics when determining the design crest level. This study concentrates on developing a new practical formula on predicting wave overtopping, by implementing two different statistical models, Multiple Linear Regression model (MLR) and Generalized Linear Regression model (GLM). The models consider dependency of overtopp...

متن کامل140-2008: Data Mining Application of Non-Linear Mixed Modeling in Water Quality Analysis
In regression analysis, non-linearity in fixed and random effects can adversely affect efficiency of regression parameter estimates. Successful non-linear time series modeling would improve regression parameter estimates and produce a richer notion of water quality than linear time series models allow. In addition multiple independent variables make each point in space a finite dimensional vect...
